Communication Breakdown Among Employees?
The Answer May Lie in the Hemispheres

At least one-third of the population thinks in pictures, while the rest think in words. Picture thinkers (visual-spatial learners) are highly creative, think outside the box, are good problem solvers, can predict trends in business, astutely read customers, see the big picture and are able to integrate information from a variety of sources. They are essential for the growth of any agency. Word thinkers (auditory-sequential learners) are essential for the stability of an organization. They can orchestrate the steps of a project from inception to completion, are mindful of the budget, attend to the details and delegate well. Innovative organizations must include both types in order to be leaders in industry.

However, picture thinkers and word thinkers may have difficulty working together.

These two groups usually rely on different parts of the brain. Auditory-sequentials are more left-hemispheric. The left hemisphere is linear, sequential, analytic, organized, aware of time and focused on details. Visual-spatials are more right-hemispheric. The right hemisphere is our mental camera: it sees the whole—the forest, while it may miss the trees. It is the seat of intuition, idea generation, creativity, invention, synthesis, art. Everyone has two hemispheres, but, like handedness, we tend to favor one or the other. It is important for both types to understand each other and work collaboratively, utilizing each other’s strengths.

It is frustrating for time-conscious individuals to deal with colleagues who repeatedly miss important deadlines. It is equally frustrating for those who see the big picture to communicate their visions to those who are not skilled at imagery. The VSR Access Team is available to offer a thorough examination of how conceptual styles affect the work environment, a quick test to determine participants’ styles, strategies for success in the workplace, and suggestions for effective collaboration through improved awareness, understanding, communication and appreciation.
